Welcome to My Cybersecurity Journey: Transitioning from Sales to Security

Hi, I’m Mike Jensen, and I’m excited to welcome you to my cybersecurity blog! After spending over 15 years in sales leadership, I made the decision to transition into the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. This blog will serve as an ongoing record of my learning journey—from obtaining key certifications to building real-world, hands-on cybersecurity experience.

Why I Chose Cybersecurity?

I’ve always had a passion for technology and problem-solving. As I began exploring cybersecurity, I quickly realized this field allows me to leverage my leadership background while constantly learning and staying at the cutting edge of tech innovation. After completing my Azure Fundamentals and CompTIA Security+ certifications, I knew cybersecurity was the right path for me.

My Certifications So Far

As part of my journey to becoming a cybersecurity expert, I’ve earned several key certifications that demonstrate my knowledge in network security, cloud security, incident response, and vulnerability management. Below is an overview of my certifications:

  • CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) – This certification focuses on core security functions such as risk management, incident response, and hands-on problem-solving in cybersecurity.
  • Azure Fundamentals – Demonstrates a strong understanding of Microsoft Azure’s cloud services and security measures.
  • Certified SOC Analyst – Validates my ability to work in a Security Operations Center (SOC), focusing on security monitoring, threat detection, and incident management.
  • Certified Cloud Security Analyst – Focuses on securing cloud infrastructures in AWS and Azure, ensuring secure deployment and threat management.
  • AWS Cloud Practitioner – Provides foundational knowledge of Amazon Web Services (AWS) and its core security principles.
  • Certified REST Engineer – Showcases my expertise in securing RESTful web services and APIs.
  • Splunk Enterprise Security (In Progress) – Deepening my skills in Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and real-time threat detection using Splunk ES.
  • Tenable One Exposure Management – Proficiency in Tenable’s platform, which helps me detect and manage vulnerabilities.

What’s Next on My Cybersecurity Journey?

Currently, I’m working to expand my expertise in cloud security and cybersecurity operations. To further enhance my skill set, I’m considering pursuing CompTIA Network+ and CySA+ certifications, which will deepen my knowledge of network security and threat management.
